Obituary for John Edward Smith

Jack Smith, 86, of New Sewickley Township, passed away on Friday May 11, 2018 at Good Samaritan Hospice in Beaver, PA.

Born January 4, 1932 in Freedom, Pennsylvania, he was the youngest son of the late Charles and Mamie (Brennan) Smith. In addition to his parents, Jack is preceded in death by his brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Faye Smith, and Robert and Roberta Smith, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law Joseph and Pearl Montini.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Marlene (Montini) Smith of New Sewickley Township, his three children Shawn (Cathy) Smith of Harleysville, PA, Scott Smith of Murfreesboro, TN and Sharon (George) Ribner of North Brunswick, NJ, seven grandchildren, Kayla (Zachary) Byers, Matthew Smith, Joshua, Abigail and Nicholas Smith and Garrett and Gianna Ribner, devoted sister-in-law Elaine Lorich, and aunt Jean Rosati, and devoted nephew, Bruce (Carolynn) Smith, and niece Patricia (Dan) Erzen, as well as several other nieces and nephews.

Jack served his country during the Korean conflict as a U.S. Army radio-operator stationed on an island off the coast of South Korea. He enjoyed relating stories of his time in the war and was keenly interested in the history of wars, particularly the U.S. Revolutionary and Civil wars.

After the war, Jack joined United States Steel, American Bridge Company where he served as a structural draftsman for 33 years. He was proud of his contributions in landmarks across the country including the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, Three Rivers Stadium and the Liberty Tower in Philadelphia, PA.

Jack will be most remembered for his dedication to his family and his love for sports and outdoor activities. Jack was happiest when his children and grandchildren visited and when he was knee-deep in a stream, selecting the correct fly, when he was trout fishing. Jack was an avid supporter of the Freedom High School football team and served in the Quarterback Club for many years.

Friends will be received today from 4-8pm at Tatalovich Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 2205 McMinn Street, Aliquippa PA.
Family and friends will meet Tuesday at St. Felix Roman Catholic Church in Freedom, at 9:45 am for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am with Fr. Paul Kuppe officiating.
Entombment will follow in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park in Rochester, PA.

The family would like to thank the extraordinary staff at Good Samaritan Hospice at Heritage Valley Beaver, for all their kindness and loving care.

Beaver County Special Unit will conduct full military honors at the funeral home on Monday May 14, 2018 at 4:00 pm.
